The Story of Robert D: Faith, Resilience, and a Vision for Hope

In January 2011, Robert D. was arrested in Phoenix after two undercover officers, posing as Mexican nationals, arranged a deal to purchase approximately 300 pounds of marijuana. Believing it to be a clear case of entrapment, Robert fought the charges for nearly two years with the help of an attorney. After 21 months, he accepted a plea deal for what he was told would be a 10-year sentence, with two cases running concurrently. However, at sentencing, Robert discovered that his lawyer had misled him. Instead of concurrent terms, the court imposed consecutive sentences, leaving him with an 18-year sentence for a cannabis-related crime.

Robert’s life before incarceration was defined by service and family. A proud Veteran, he served 10 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force. He has been married to his wife, his childhood sweetheart whom he has known since they were 15, and together they raised two brilliant daughters, Alicia and Octavia. Today, they are also the proud grandparents of five. With their shared entrepreneurial spirit, Robert and his wife built three businesses: AZ Bright Power Washing, Life Changers International, and L&R, Inc., the latter named in honor of a close friend who passed away.

Now 58 years old, Robert has endured profound personal loss while incarcerated, including the passing of three siblings. Yet, through these hardships, he has remained determined to grow—vocationally, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

His accomplishments during this time reflect his resilience and commitment to self-improvement:

· HVAC Universal Technician

· CDL Certification

· Masonry

· Changing Offender Behavior Program

· Anger Management

· Substance Abuse Awareness

· Spanish Language Studies

· Bible Study Facilitator

Of all his achievements, Robert’s spiritual journey stands out as the cornerstone of his life. Long before his imprisonment, he became an ordained minister and spent a decade preaching the gospel with Pardon Ministries, while also ministering at Last Day Revival Center in Phoenix. Inside prison, his faith has continued to guide him. In an environment often marked by chaos and instability, Robert has dedicated himself to mentoring and encouraging others—teaching men of all ages how to make better choices, live with purpose, and build lives rooted in faith.

As his case moves through the appeals process, Robert remains hopeful for release later this year. His vision for the future is clear: to build a church in the Valley and fulfill his calling to serve. Alongside this mission, he plans to create multi-unit communities for veterans, the homeless, and at-risk youth—safe havens where people can find stability, support, and hope.

Despite the trials he has endured, he continues to embody strength, faith, and a deep commitment to helping others.
