Michael B. began his path of service one year after graduating high school by joining the National Guard. Soon after, he embarked on a career in the U.S. Army, serving from 1987 to 1991. During his time in uniform, he spent two years in Korea and became a Communications Specialist, proudly fulfilling his duties until his honorable discharge.
Life after the military, however, proved far more challenging. Despite his skills and qualifications, Michael often found himself working petty jobs. He recalls how the prejudicial culture of his community, combined with mismanagement at the VA, created barriers that made it difficult to move forward. Though he had been taught not to blame others, the weight of these struggles led him into depression. In an attempt to cope, he began smoking marijuana, and eventually, in desperation for income, he made the poor decision to sell it.
After the passing of his mother, Michael’s life spiraled further, and he spent three years homeless on the streets as a veteran. Yet, in what he describes as an act of providence, he connected with Alongside Ministries in Phoenix. There, he found support, got married, and attended welding school. Still, financial struggles persisted, and without a strong foundation in his faith at the time, he returned to selling marijuana to make ends meet. That decision ultimately led to a 15-year prison sentence. But it was within those prison walls that Michael experienced a profound transformation. He rededicated his life to Christ and committed himself to a complete renewal—spiritually, physically, vocationally, and mentally.
Michael has since become a man on a mission. He has immersed himself in programs and training opportunities, including:
· Bridges for Life
· Emmaus Bible Studies
· Crossroads
· Small Business Development
· Malachi Dads
· HVAC and Carpentry
· Spiritual Retreat
· Culinary Arts Certification
Anyone who spends even a few minutes with Michael can see his vision, passion, and servant’s heart. He speaks with clarity and conviction about his future, filled with honorable goals and a desire to give back. Though he will be released “unhoused” in a few years, he remains deeply optimistic. The support of his ex-wife, sister, and children, combined with his unwavering faith, gives him the strength to keep moving forward. Through his business courses, Michael has developed a strategic plan to use entrepreneurship as a platform to build wealth and uplift his community. His greatest passion lies in helping young people, and he speaks with sincerity when he says, “I want to sow into our children.”
Michael B.’s story is one of resilience, redemption, and vision. From soldier to survivor, from hardship to hope, he continues to walk a path of faith and purpose—determined to turn his trials into a legacy of service and inspiration for others.
