Brian J. comes from a proud family of service. His father was a Marine, his uncle served in the Navy, and his brother continues to serve in the Navy today. Following in their footsteps, Brian became a Navy Veteran himself, carrying forward the tradition of dedication and sacrifice.
Now 53 years old, Brian’s journey has been marked by both achievement and struggle. He began his adult life in Minnesota, attending college to explore his interests and “find a path” forward. While studying general courses, he gained valuable work experience in retail, car dealerships, auto show management, and advertising for used cars. In 1997, he moved to Arizona and began working as an auto mechanic. His strong work ethic and ability to learn quickly earned him a promotion to Assistant Manager at Firestone Auto. But when the company closed, Brian found himself searching for new direction—and it was during this time that he fell into the grip of drug addiction.
In 2005, after serving a term in jail, Brian returned to society determined to rebuild his life for himself and his family. He found work at a call center, where his dedication and natural leadership skills helped him rise to a management position which he held for eight years. Yet, despite his professional success, Brian continued to struggle with addiction, leading to more time behind bars due to DUIs.
Prison has become a turning point for Brian. He has faced his challenges head-on and embraced the work needed to create lasting change. Above all, his greatest motivation comes from his family. Brian is the proud father of four daughters and two sons, ranging in age from 1 to 22. He speaks with them regularly, and his love for them is evident in both his words and his actions. As he says with heartfelt sincerity, “My kids deserve to have a father in their lives.”
This commitment is more than just words. Brian has been actively working to better himself through education and personal growth. He has completed courses in cognitive thinking, Changing Offender Behavior, SAGE Counseling, and DUI education, where he has learned valuable tools for managing triggers, making better decisions, and solving problems constructively. He has also taken part in work programs, contributing financially and finding purpose in being of service to others.
Recently, Brian worked as a Teacher’s Aide and is now excelling as a Customer Service Representative for an advertising company that operates within the unit. Soon, he will begin a Small Business and Entrepreneurship course hosted by SCORE and local business leaders, equipping him with the skills to pursue new opportunities upon release.
Brian’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and hope. He is committed to building a better future, not only for himself but for his children. His personal mantra captures his new outlook on life: “Give myself a new high… being sober!”
Brian J.’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that it is never too late to change, grow, and create a brighter tomorrow.
